Soon after the San Diego Regional in 2008, our team sat together the Saturday night after competition and talked of improvement. What would we do to delegate tasks better for the upcoming year? How could we avoid another close match? After a few presentations and ideas crossed through many Google docs over the summer, Team 701 formed a new kind of leadership role, and it has worked wonders for us since.
Along with the basics of a leadership, President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer, we also have an Engineering Director and Business Director. These positions are held by veteran members elected by the team every year. For the rookies and other members who aren't a part of Leadership we have different committees they can be a part of. We have mechanical, inventor, electrical, robot programming, DS programming, and animation commitees. There are heads of these commitees that are appointed by the leadership who have to keep track of the commitees progress throughout build season. By having these commitees we can have the students choose which they want to be in, in the beginning of the year and train them before build season comes around. So the students know what commitee they want to be a part of, Leadership puts together a Robot Camp during summer. Here the students get a taste of each of the commitees throughout the week. Then the last day of camp, just for fun they get to pick 2 commitees that they think they would like to join and they have to complete a challenge. And if a student wasn't able to be at Robot Camp, or they don't really remember what they had to do on each of the commitees then one week before build season, they sign up for a commitee and the head of each commitee refreshes their memory. Some commitees have challenges that their students have to complete others just go through the basics to make sure the students remember. |
