Soon after the San Diego Regional in 2008, our team sat together the Saturday night after competition and talked of improvement. What would we do to delegate tasks better for the upcoming year? How could we avoid another close match? After a few presentations and ideas crossed through many Google docs over the summer, Team 701 formed a new kind of leadership role.
Handbook
One thing we did differently than past years was write a Handbook for our team. We included required GPA to travel to regionals, hours required for each member for the year (100), and even dress code! The unique thing was that we delegated sections to veteran members to write, so it definately was a team effort.
Please take a look @ our Handbook.

Student Leadership
In past years, we had the usual President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary. This year, we kept this general combo but added the roles of Engineering and Business Director.
The general responsibilities/members with that role are...
- President - oversees, manages the team - Priya Rangan
- Vice President - helps President with managing team - Lauren Brown
- Treasurer - responsible for tasks involving cash/money, corresponds with RPM Finance - Bradley Mossman
- Secretary - keeps agenda, fills our requests, team documents - Lyndon Villanueva
- Engineering Director - go-to guy/gal for items pertaining to robot, Build Season schedule - Steven Sigley
- Business Director - go-to guy/gal for items pertaining to Public Relations - Sammy Murphy
Committees
This year, we implemented a new kind of role delegation. We narrowed responsibilities to the committees of: Prototyping, Mechanical, Inventor, Electrical, Programming, Competition Support and Public Relations. With these commitees, we were able to assign members to tasks and train them in skills before the season started with workshops (such as CNC, using the Mill, shop basics).
- Mechanical - focus on structural components of robot (like chasis, motors, systems, etc.)
- Inventor - designs and models possible designs for robot, as well as "accessories" such as robot crate, wagon, and/or pit.
- Electrical - focus on wiring and organization/implementation of electronics on robot
- LabView Programming - writes code for autonomous and implementation of sensors for robot
- DS Programming - a new committee this year, they program DSs' to compute and compile information for easy scouting at competition
- Animation - works with 3D Studio Max to make an annual animation to submit for competition
- Business - take videos/pics, document Chairmans, outreach/community involvement, and manage prep for competitions
